CARE: Compassion for Animals, Respect for the Earth. Founded in 2007 by Jan Allegretti, D.Vet.Hom, and Ron Epstein, Ph.D., CARE is a Mendocino County, California, animal advocacy organization dedicated to raising awareness about the sentience and consciousness of nonhuman animals, and the choices we can make to create a more compassionate world for them in our community and beyond.
The Nonhuman Rights Project. This is the only organization working through the common law to achieve actual LEGAL rights for members of species other than our own. Their mission is to change the common law status of at least some nonhuman animals from mere “things,” which lack the capacity to possess any legal right, to “persons,” who possess such fundamental rights as bodily integrity and bodily liberty, and those other legal rights to which evolving standards of morality, scientific discovery, and human experience entitle them.
Mercy for Animals is dedicated to preventing cruelty to farmed animals and promoting compassionate food choices and policies. MFA works to create a society where all animals are treated with the compassion and respect they so rightfully deserve. They serve as a voice for animals through proactive consumer education initiatives, cruelty investigations, corporate outreach, and legal advocacy.
The Guardian Campaign. Under the leadership and inspiration of pioneering animal advocate Elliot Katz, D.V.M., the Guardian Campaign encourages us all to use language that reflects our roles as guardians of other species, not “owners.” If as a society we recognize that “They are not our property… we are not their owners,” we can hope to change the societal consciousness that accepts abuse and exploitation of nonhuman animals everywhere. In Defense of Animals also oversees a broad range of issues that affect other species worldwide. Campaigns include work to end laboratory experimentation and puppy mills, supporting wildlife habitat and sanctuary, farm animal rescue, and much more.
